I asked those same questions, too.
My homeschooling journey didn’t begin because I always planned to homeschool. In fact, I spent years preparing for a career in public education. But life has a way of changing our plans—and looking back, I’m so grateful it did.
My Journey From Biology to Education
Growing up, I dreamed of becoming a scientist. In second grade, I proudly told my teacher, Mrs. Gahn, that I wanted to be a biologist. That dream stayed with me through college, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Biology and planned to attend medical school.
After being accepted into medical school, I realized my heart was pulling me in a different direction.
Instead, I accepted a position as a tortoise biologist. One of the highlights of that job was helping build a tortoise habitat at the very elementary school where Mrs. Gahn had become the principal. It felt like life had come full circle.
Becoming a Teacher
While pregnant with my first child, I enrolled in a Master’s program in Curriculum and Instruction and began teaching in a school that truly valued creativity and innovation.
One day, I shared a dream with my principal: I wanted to replace traditional instruction with project-based learning organized around nine engaging themes.
To my surprise, she didn’t just approve the idea—she championed it.
Together, we transformed the curriculum into a hands-on learning experience that encouraged curiosity, creativity, and deeper understanding.
When Life Changed My Plans
Just three weeks after welcoming my third child, I was preparing to launch our new curriculum when life unexpectedly changed course.
Without reliable childcare for three young children, I made the incredibly difficult decision to leave my dream teaching job and accept a position with an online charter school.
Although I enjoyed working with my students, I also witnessed many of the challenges facing public education. I taught middle school English to students who were reading years below grade level. Instead of receiving the intensive support they needed, many were simply promoted to the next grade.
It was heartbreaking to watch children lose confidence because they had never been given the opportunity to build a strong educational foundation.
Why We Chose Homeschooling
During my second year teaching online, I was pregnant with our fourth child while preparing for my oldest to begin kindergarten.
Living in one of the largest school districts in the country, I began researching our educational options. I explored neighborhood schools, charter schools, and magnet programs, hoping to find the right fit.
The more I researched, the more I realized that none of those options aligned with the kind of education I envisioned for my children.
I wanted them to have time to explore, ask questions, create, build, experiment, and develop a genuine love of learning—not simply prepare for the next standardized test.
After finishing the school year and welcoming our fourth child, our family made the decision to homeschool.
It remains one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
Creating the Homeschool Curriculum I Couldn’t Find
As I searched for homeschool curriculum, I noticed something was missing.
Many programs were academically strong but lacked meaningful hands-on learning. Others were fun but didn’t provide the educational depth I wanted.
So I combined everything I had learned as a biologist, classroom teacher, curriculum designer, and homeschool mom to create the curriculum I had been searching for.
Our lessons are built around children’s natural curiosity. Instead of forcing them to memorize facts, they investigate science through experiments, create art inspired by what they’re learning, read living books, and explore topics that spark genuine excitement.
When my children became fascinated with sharks, helicopters, snakes, spiders, cars, and space, those interests became opportunities for learning.
Because I homeschool multiple ages, I also designed every lesson to be easily adapted for different grade levels, allowing our family to learn together while still meeting each child’s individual needs.
Where We Are Today
Today, we begin each school year filled with excitement. What started as homeschooling our own children has grown into learning alongside friends and sharing our curriculum with other families.
My children wake up excited for school because learning feels like an adventure. They spend their days experimenting, creating, reading, exploring nature, asking questions, and discovering the world around them.
Watching them develop confidence, curiosity, and a true love of learning has been more rewarding than I ever imagined.
